When anxiety builds or pain becomes overwhelming, one of the gentlest ways to cope is through simple creative distraction. I’ve shared before how long-stitch sewing, taking photos of “glimmers,” and coloring mandalas have helped me quiet my thoughts and bring myself back into the present moment.

Recently, I’ve been exploring a new form of mindful creativity: Zentangle.

Zentangle is a structured form of doodling designed to calm the mind, slow your breathing, and anchor your focus. What I love about it is that you don’t need to be an artist, you don’t need fancy tools, and you don’t need a plan. You simply sit, breathe, and let your hand wander across the page.

The process is simple:

  • Place small corner dots
  • Draw a soft border
  • Add a string (a loose guideline)
  • Fill each section with repeating patterns
  • Shade, sign, and take a moment to appreciate what you made

It’s amazing how something so small and simple can quiet the mind so effectively.

As someone who naturally doodles all the time, I found the structure surprisingly comforting. The steps helped me let go of the “am I doing this right?” feeling and just focus on moving my hand. Before long, I felt calmer, more grounded, and more connected to my body. Even ten or fifteen minutes made a difference.

If you’re not usually a doodler, starting with these steps can make it feel less intimidating. And once you begin, it becomes easier to let your creativity take over.

If you want to try filling your page with meaningful little motifs, here are some I love using:

  • Mandala-style circles
  • Leaves and vines
  • Trees and roots
  • Concentric ripples
  • Weaving patterns
  • Feathers
  • Stars
  • Waves
  • Bubbles and beads
  • Butterflies
  • Small stepping stones

Each one carries a quiet message of healing, grounding, or hope — a perfect combination when anxiety feels heavy.

Final Thoughts & A Lovely Read

While exploring Zentangle, I came across a beautiful post by another blogger who dove deeply into the practice in such a warm, creative way. Her reflections really resonated with me, and if you’d like to learn more—including a closer look at the official Zentangle steps—I highly recommend reading her post here:
