Christmas Is Supposed to Feel Joyful
But for Some of Us, It Feels Heavy
There’s a version of Christmas we’re all shown.
Warm lights. Easy laughter. Calm mornings. Full tables. Big smiles.
And then there’s the version some of us actually live.
The one where your chest feels tight for no clear reason.
Where your thoughts won’t slow down.
Where even “happy” moments feel overwhelming instead of comforting.
If you’re feeling anxious as Christmas gets closer, I want you to know something right away:
You’re not broken. You’re not failing the holidays. And you’re definitely not alone.
I’ve lived with anxiety for over 20 years. And Christmas has never been simple for me.
Not because I don’t love it.
Not because I’m ungrateful.
But because anxiety doesn’t take holidays off.
Sometimes, it actually gets louder this time of year.
The Pressure No One Talks About
Christmas comes with invisible expectations.
Be happy.
Be grateful.
Be social.
Be present.
Be festive.
And when you’re anxious, those expectations can feel crushing.
You might worry about:
• Family gatherings
• Money
• Being “on” all the time
• Letting people down
• Feeling like you’re not enjoying it enough
Or maybe you’re carrying grief, loneliness, or exhaustion into a season that tells you to smile anyway.
That disconnect alone can trigger anxiety.
And then we blame ourselves for feeling it.
When Anxiety Shows Up Quietly
For me, Christmas anxiety doesn’t always look like panic.
Sometimes it looks like:
• Overthinking every plan
• Feeling irritable for no reason
• Wanting to escape rooms full of people
• Lying awake at night with racing thoughts
• Feeling emotionally numb instead of joyful
It’s subtle. Sneaky. Easy to dismiss.
But it’s still real.
And pretending it isn’t there only makes it stronger.
You Don’t Have to Push Through This Alone
One thing I’ve learned the hard way is this:
Anxiety softens when it’s understood.
When I stopped fighting my feelings and started learning why my body reacts the way it does, things began to change.
That’s why I created my free anxiety workbook — not as a cure, but as a place to start feeling steadier and more supported.
If you’re struggling right now, you can download my free anxiety workbook here.
No pressure. No expectations. Just something supportive if you need it.
Christmas Anxiety Doesn’t Mean You’re Doing Life Wrong
I want to say this clearly:
Feeling anxious during the holidays does not mean you’re ungrateful.
It does not mean you’re negative.
It does not mean you’re broken.
It means your nervous system is overwhelmed.
And overwhelmed systems need calm, not criticism.
You don’t need to force joy.
You don’t need to fake peace.
You don’t need to “make the most of it.”
You’re allowed to move at your own pace this season.
If You’re Ready for Deeper Support
Over the years, I’ve slowly built tools that help me understand anxiety, calm my body, and rebuild trust with myself — especially during hard seasons like this.
That’s why I created my self-paced anxiety recovery course, designed for people who need gentle structure without pressure.
It walks you through:
• Understanding anxiety
• Calming your nervous system
• Reducing fear responses
• Rebuilding confidence step by step
If that feels supportive, you can explore the Calm & Confident Anxiety Recovery Course here.
There’s no rush. It will be there when you are.
If This Space Has Helped You

A Gentle Reminder Before You Go
You don’t have to love Christmas to survive it.
You don’t have to feel joyful to be worthy of rest.
You don’t have to be okay to belong here.
If tonight feels heavy, take a breath with me.
You’re doing the best you can.
And that is enough.
