Panic attacks feel terrifying — especially when you don’t understand what’s happening inside your body.

But here’s the truth:

A panic attack is your body’s survival system firing at full volume.

Nothing more.

Nothing less.

Let’s walk through what’s really happening.

1. Your brain misreads a signal

Your amygdala — the part of your brain responsible for danger detection — sends out an alarm.

Sometimes it does this without a clear trigger.

This doesn’t mean you’re in danger.

It means your brain is overwhelmed.

2. Your body releases adrenaline

This creates:

  • racing heart
  • sweaty palms
  • shaking
  • nausea
  • dizziness
  • chest tightness

Your body is preparing you to run or fight — even though there’s no threat.

🌿 

3. Your breathing changes

You might feel like you “can’t breathe,” but it’s often fast, shallow breathing — not lack of oxygen.

Slow exhales help reverse this.

4. Your thoughts respond to the physical rush

Your mind tries to make sense of the sensations:

  • “Something is wrong.”
  • “I’m dying.”
  • “I can’t handle this.”

But the sensations came first.

The thoughts are reactions, not causes.

5. The wave peaks and then falls

Most panic attacks peak within 10 minutes.

Your body cannot stay in that state forever.

Even if it feels endless, your nervous system will calm down.

Understanding the symptoms removes fear

Once you know:

  • why your heart races
  • why you feel faint
  • why you shake
  • why you feel disconnected

…panic becomes less scary.

You’re not dying.

You’re not losing control.

Your body is overwhelmed — not broken.
